Track and Field has a longstanding tradition in Hopkins Athletics. The team competes in various meets throughout the season, and competes against both private and public schools. Track and Field strives to make athletes better through a variety of strength, conditioning, and running drills, and employs other practices such as yoga.
Margaret Coons has been working with Varsity Track and Field since 2024 and became head coach in 2025. She previously coached Varsity Cross Country at Wilbur Cross High School. Coach Coons attended Columbus Academy in Gahanna, Ohio, where she captained the cross country and track teams and was a two-time state qualifier with her 4x800 relay team, earning Academic All-Ohio honors. Coach Coons continues to run road races, including four half marathons; her favorite days of the year are the IRIS 5k and New Haven Road Race. When not coaching, she teaches history at Hopkins and serves as support staff at a girls' summer camp in southern Maine.
In the 2025 season, Coach Che Dawson became the Head Coach. He has been with the Track & Field program since 2019. Coach Che specializes in coaching mid-distance and distance runners, and has coached several All-State and All-American youth and high school athletes. Many of his previous athletes have gone on to compete at the collegiate level. Outside of Hopkins, Coach Che coaches the New Haven Age Group Track Club, Connecticut's premier youth track club, and is the executive director and principal of Highville Charter School.
