  • Oragami Club Big Projects

Origami Club is a place for students to learn origami in a calm environment. It’s a fun way to relax and make paper art. We aim to spread the art of origami with the whole school! Our first week, we all made kawasaki rose variants, a simple (for most people) yet beautiful origami piece that club members got to take home (or donate to the 1000 origami project!).

Origami club is hosting two upcoming events!

    1000 Origami Project:
      • The Origami Club is starting a really cool project and we NEED YOUR HELP!
      • We are making a display full of 1000 pieces of origami inspired by the 1000 origami crane story, but instead of just cranes we’re including flowers, butterflies and dragons too. Contribution does not need to take up a lot of your time, just make something you are pleased with and drop it off in Mr. Young’s office :)
      • A tentative end date for this project is around the end of this year.

Bake Sale For Art Supplies in Pediatric Wards:
      • DO YOU like Brownies? Cupcakes? APPLE PIE? (results will vary based on club head’s skill)
      • Come enjoy a sweet treat at upper heath on February 18th and help provide children with art supplies

This past weekend, the Quiz Bowl team competed at the Island Cup VI Tournament at Kings Park High School in Long Island. Facing off against some of the best teams in the country, Hopkins placed 7th in a field of 18 teams. The team also saw impressive individual placements, with team member Neil Mehta ’26 scoring 290 total points and ranking 29th out of nearly 80 players, and team captain Claire Billings ’25 putting up the tournament’s highest individual score of 875 points. Claire also clinched the coveted award for most incorrect answers: a plastic tub of expired mayo.
Quiz Bowl also saw success at their January tournament at Choate, with high individual placements from young team members Angel Lu ’28 (15th), Noah Novemsky ’27 (19th), and Todd Xue ’27 (24th).
  • Robotics FTC Wins + New Developments

The halls of Vernon Center Middle School were buzzing with excitement this Saturday as Hopkins' FTC robotics teams proved that even mechanical hiccups can't hold back true innovation. Despite facing their share of technical challenges, both teams turned obstacles into opportunities. The Maroon Team - the Hopkins RoboGoats - caught everyone's attention with their ingenious 3D printed intake system, a design that earned them the Innovate Award. Meanwhile, their sister team, the cleverly dubbed Hopkins Schrödinger's Goats, showcased all-around excellence to capture second place for the Inspire Award - the competition's highest honor - securing an impressive bid to the state championship.
This success at the FTC level comes at an exciting time for Hopkins robotics, as the program takes a giant leap forward with the launch of its first-ever FRC team. For those not in the robotics loop, FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) is essentially the varsity team of high school robotics - where students design and build industrial-grade robots for intense, high-stakes competitions. Team captains Jacob, Jeet, Albert, Wyatt, and Michael are leading this ambitious expansion that's already attracting attention from major partners like NASA.
The growth doesn't stop at competitive teams, though. Hopkins has created a comprehensive robotics pipeline that starts with a dedicated training team. This innovative approach is already paying dividends, with many rookie members successfully transitioning to the new FRC team this spring.
In the classroom, Hopkins is pushing boundaries just as aggressively. Students can now progress from an introductory robotics course to the cutting-edge AI and Advanced Robotics class, where they work hands-on with the same robotic dogs that have become a familiar sight around campus. But perhaps the most exciting development is yet to come - with the opening of the new APAC building, the Malone seminar room is set for transformation into a state-of-the-art robotics laboratory, featuring professional-grade ventilation systems, collaborative workstations,

    NYPDL January:
Hopdebate had a great performance at NYPDL January! Highlights included: Dr. Z discovering .5s, winning the novice finals and division, judges falling asleep in-round, several teams getting one win away from breaking to quarters, a certain team making us almost miss the train because they had to get smoothies, running with 10 bobas, and driving up business in an empty Chinese restaurant by 500%. • Science Bowl

Science Bowl headed up to Massachusetts for the MIT Science Bowl Invitational on November 16th. With some incredibly difficult competition (we faced the eventual champions in the first round), we knew we had to lock in. Despite the trials and tribulations as for many of us, this was our first in-person high school scibowl match due to Covid, we managed to improve round over round eventually winning in dominant fashion. Although we did not advance from our group we had successful scrimmages and we have been practicing and preparing for our revenge tour at States in February. If you’re interested in joining our team or have any questions, please reach out to bporosoff25@students.hopkins.edu or ntakoudes25@students.hopkins.edu.
  • Debate Club

    Upcoming Events:
    • Public Showcase Debate on Food Insecurity with StuCo and Maroon Key: Upper Heath during activities block on December 11th
      • Come listen and learn about food insecurity in CT and abroad! We’ll have free snacks. After the showcase debate, audience members can participate in mini-debates with the officers on random topics (anything you can think of), offer a random topic, or judge a mini-debate! If you like arguing or eating, you should definitely consider coming.
    • NYPDL January In-Person 25-26
      • We had a lot of demand for Choate, so this time around, anyone who signs up will be likely guaranteed a spot! New York is always a lot of fun, and it’s a great opportunity for novice debaters, so keep an eye out for the registration form via Google Classroom.

    Interested in joining?
    • Improve your public speaking skills! We learn and debate about all kinds of topics, from philosophy and economics to whether or not 10% of the population should become a worm. Hopdebate competes across New England, with coaching from the Yale Debate Association. We’re also one of the few clubs with funding, which means we’ll have food at our pre-NYPDL January meeting for anyone going (boba?)
    • Join our Google Classroom for more info (576nui6)! You can also follow us on Instagram @hopdebate (we’re the best club instagram account). Contact cwang26 or kagarwal25 with any questions or concerns :)
  • Chess Club

The Chess Club is competing in the FCICL (Fairfield County Interscholastic Chess League) this year! We have matches every Tuesday (online) against schools from all over CT. After 5 rounds, we’re currently tied for third! We’re always looking for new members to join our team, even if it's only for a few matches for the rest of the year. If you’re interested in joining our team or have any questions, please reach out to nhuang25@students.hopkins.edu or ntakoudes25@students.hopkins.edu.

We’re also attending the USATE (United States Amateur Team East) tournament over President’s Day weekend in February! With over 300 teams in attendance, this tournament is a great way to gain over-the-board experience at a high level. We have very few spots remaining, so if you’d like to join our team please reach out nhuang25@students.hopkins.edu or ntakoudes25@students.hopkins.edu. Our Google Classroom code is vvgixse - we meet every other Wednesday in B202!
  • Quiz Bowl

Quiz Bowl recently competed in Belmont High School’s Fall Tournament! We had a strong showing with our A team placing 8th in standard division, and a bold team of three playing in the novice division. Shoutout to Captain Claire B. and sophomore Derin B. for making top scorers in their respective divisions (with the panda stickers to prove it), and freshman Ravi C. for winning the coveted can of beans with his 20 incorrect answers! We want to thank everyone who came out to play quiz bowl over the beginning of their Thanksgiving break, and are looking forward to hosting our own inter-Hopkins tournament (date TBD). Go Hop!
  • Model UN

Model UN recently attended BUSUN (Brown University Model United Nations Conference) and was able to engage in debate on topics from the Olympics to peaceful use of outer space. Club Head Josie L was able to take home an honorable mention delegate award in her crisis committee and we had strong performances across the board from new and experienced MUN-ers! We are also excited to announce that registration for Hopkin’s own conference (HOPMUN) is expected to open in mid-January and will be available to the entire community.
