Hopkins Extends Warm Welcome to Yali-Peicui Students
On Thursday, September 26, Hopkins hosted 31 students and 3 teachers from the Yali-Peicui School in Changsha, China, New Haven’s sister city, from September 25–27, 2024. During their visit, students from both Yali-Peicui and Hopkins had the opportunity to learn from one another and forge deeper connections between cultures.
Hopkins welcomed the guests with a special all-school assembly where both schools shared performances in honor of each other. The Hopkins Jazz Band performed "Lindy Hopper’s Delight," and Nia M. ’26 performed the Chinese folk song "Mo Li Hua." In turn, Yali-Peicui students presented a popular Chinese song and dance number and played the Kuaiban, a traditional Chinese instrument.
Between the musical performances, Hopkins’ Head of School Matt Glendinning and Yali-Peicui’s Assistant Principal Zhang Na Na exchanged gifts and words of appreciation. Hopkins School received a traditional Chinese calligraphy scroll, while Yali-Peicui was given a framed picture of Baldwin Hall to add to their collection of Hopkins campus photos given in past visits.
After attending classes on Thursday, the Yali-Peicui group joined Hopkins’ 7th-grade class on their trip to the Durham Fair on Friday. During their stay, they also toured New Haven and Yale University and met with Mayor Justin Elicker. To conclude their trip to the East Coast, Hopkins hosted a farewell pizza dinner for Yali-Peicui in typical New Haven fashion.
The visit strengthened the bond between the schools, fostering cultural exchange and lasting friendships that Hopkins and Yali-Peicui hope will continue to grow for years to come.
Hopkins is a private middle school and high school for grades 7-12. Located on a campus overlooking New Haven, CT, the School takes pride in its intellectually curious students as well as its dedicated faculty and staff.
