Hopkins' Team Wins First-Ever Connecticut History Bowl Championship
On Saturday, March 2, three teams from the Hopkins' Quiz Bowl and History Clubs participated in the Connecticut Spring History Bowl Tournament at Newtown High School in Sandy Hook. Hopkins' A team won the Varsity Division finals with a 330-130 victory over Fordham Prep A, securing the Connecticut Championship title for the first time in the program’s history. The School's first junior school History Bowl team competed in the Junior Varsity (JV) division, facing high school teams, including Hopkins' own B team, which finished third overall after a close semifinal match against Marine Science Magnet.
History Bowl is an academic competition that tests students’ knowledge in history-related topics, including geography, classics, media, and politics. Teams of four students compete in a fast-paced question-and-answer format similar to Jeopardy! The tournament consisted of five preliminary matches, with top-scoring teams advancing to the playoff rounds.
Both the A and B teams qualified for the History Bowl National Championship in Arlington, VA, in late April. Additionally, A team members Claire B. ’25, Henry F. ’25, and Neil M. ’26 qualified for the International History Olympiad in London this June. The International History Olympiad is a biennial event that celebrates history and brings together top primary and secondary school history students from around the world for competitions, field trips, social activities, and more.
Hopkins' Quiz Bowl team also competed in a tournament on Long Island in February, placing seventh out of 18 teams. Team member Neil M. ranked 29th out of nearly 80 players, while captain Claire B. recorded the highest individual score of the tournament with 875 points.
Hopkins is a private middle school and high school for grades 7-12. Located on a campus overlooking New Haven, CT, the School takes pride in its intellectually curious students as well as its dedicated faculty and staff.
