Hopkins falls to Gunnery on the road

Hopkins travelled an hour north to sunny Washington, CT to face off against a tough Gunnery Highlanders team.  Ultimately the Highlanders proved to be too much for the Hilltoppers, besting Hopkins 26-2 in front of a home crowd.

Gunnery started the game with a bang, mounting a 9-play, 59 yard opening drive resulting in a rushing touchdown.  Doug Wardlaw would apply good pressure on the extra point, blocking the attempt and keeping the game at 6-0.  The Hilltoppers began their offensive series well, picking up key first down runs from Jake Moscarelli and David Barber while driving into Gunnery territory.  After a failed 4th and 5 attempt Gunnery took over again, this time putting together a 14-play, 7 minute touchdown series where they continued their rushing dominance.  Hopkins would once again stop the Highlanders extra point attempt making it 12-0.  The Hilltoppers’ second series began much like the first, driving deep into Gunnery territory before a 4th and long interception ended the drive.  The Hilltoppers would see the ball once more before the half, recovering a Gunnery fumble just outside of the 20 yard-line.  Unfortunately penalties would derail Hopkins hopes at scoring, giving the ball back to Gunnery with seconds left to end the half.

The second half seemed like a mirror of the first, Hopkins driving deep into Gunnery territory but unable to convert key 4th downs and create points.  Hopkins would get on the board with a key safety on 1st down, Jackson Quinn holding the QB up until Cooper Pettit came in for the sack and 2 points.  After a quick 3 and out, Gunnery would take over and ultimately turn the ball over to Jake Moscarelli on a long 3rd down attempt early in the 4th quarter.  The Hilltoppers once again failed to put a drive together and gave the ball back to Gunnery down 12-2 with just under 5 minutes left to play.  Gunnery would add on 2 late touchdowns with a QB run and pick-6 on consecutive plays to best Hopkins 26-2.

Hopkins will have another tough game next week as they face off against a strong Westminster team, recently coming off a 36-20 victory over St. Mark’s.  This will also be our homecoming weekend and we hope to see our fans out in full force!
