Boys Tennis Daringly Defeats Defending NE Champs, 4-3!
From Coach Bill Ewen:
On Wednesday, May 5th, the Hopkins and Greens Farms boys' varsity tennis teams came to the Hopkins courts fully prepared to do battle with one another, supporting respective 7--1 and 6--1 dual meet records up to that point. Last year the Greens Farms team had silenced Hopkins by a 7--0 score, but the Hopkins players and coaches were determined that such would not be the case in 2004.
Seniors Dan Wong and Nate Lifton got Hopkins on the scoreboard early with a convincing 6--2, 6--1 victory at #2 doubles. But this was quickly negated by straight set Greens Farms victories at #1 singles and #1 doubles. Freshman Phil Bernasek used bullet-like ground strokes at #3 singles to dismantle his 12th grade opponent, 7--5, 6--0.
With the match score now knotted at 2--2, both tri-captain Lenny Kolstad at #2 singles and tri-captain Adam Sauerteig at #4 singles split sets with their worthy and determined Greens Farms opponents. Hopkins' #3 doubles team of Nick Perkins and Nate Rosenblatt saw their early 4--1 first set lead evaporate into a 5--5 deadlock.
Eventually, Perkins and Rosenblatt regained their early sense of momentum and came through with a hard fought 7--5, 6--2 victory. But soon thereafter, Adam Sauerteig succumbed to the persistent play of his Greens Farms opponent, 6--2 in the 3rd set.
This brought everything down to the #2 singles--Lenny Kolstad vs. Chris Piasecki. It was only fitting that this fiercely contested match should come down to a 3rd set tiebreaker. With the match hanging in the balance, both players had several match point opportunities, with Lenny finally emerging with a heart-stopping 11--9 overtime tiebreaker victory for his Hopkins team! Players from both schools are to be congratulated on their sense of commitment and determination.
Hopkins is a private middle school and high school for grades 7-12. Located on a campus overlooking New Haven, CT, the School takes pride in its intellectually curious students as well as its dedicated faculty and staff.
