On Saturday, September 14th, the Hopkins Hilltoppers (1-0) hosted the Hackley Hornets (1-0) for interleague MIFL play. Under sunny skies and warm conditions, the Hornets proved to be too much for the Hilltoppers and they won 38-0.
This was a challenging game for the Hilltoppers as they struggled to get much of a rhythm going on offense against an aggressive Hornets defense. Hopkins' offense produced 5 turnovers in the game (2 in the first half), and Hackley led 21-0 at halftime behind 2 passing touchdowns and a short rushing score. The highlight from the first half included a hard hit from Hopkins safety Maurice Ellis ‘27, which produced a Hornets fumble which was recovered by senior captain Matt Goos ‘25. The Hilltoppers played tougher with a scoreless 3rd quarter, but the Hornets continued to produce, tacking on two more touchdowns (1 passing and 1 rushing) and a 31 yard field goal in the 4th quarter to set the final score at 38-0.
Hopkins will hope to put this game behind them as they prepare to travel on the road to face Fieldston (0-2 with losses to Horace Mann and Poly Prep). This is the Hilltoppers first game against Fieldston since the 2019 season, and we hope that many of our family and friends will be making the trip to the Bronx with us to support the team!
