Hopkins at the Princeton Model Congress

A delegation of 42 students and three chaperones traveled to Washington, D.C. over break to participate in the Princeton Model Congress.
Princeton Model Congress is the nation's premiere civics education program for high school students. PMC offers high school students the opportunity to simulate the experience of serving in Congress, sitting on the bench as a Supreme Court Justice, counseling our Commander in Chief as a member of the Presidential Cabinet or covering the Federal Government in print as a part of the Press Corp. The conference draws approximately 1,200 participants from all across the political spectrum and from all over the country. The conference takes place just down the street from White House —literally a five-minute walk away—so that our participants experience an added dimension of realism that no other model congress in America offers.

The Hopkins delegation this year was 42 students strong, drawn from the 21st Century Democracy classes taught by John Roberts and Thom Peters. Of all the roles the students took on in the conference, we had three Supreme Court Justices: Lindsay Meyerson, Anna Ayres-Brown, and Noah Rennert; and two Cabinet Secretaries: Defense, Walker Schneider, and Ambassador to the United Nations, Michael Bass.

Theo LeCompte, Hopkins Class of 1997, gave our students a "behind the scenes" tour of the Department of Commerce, where he now works and talked to the group about his time at Hopkins and his current position. Theo took Mr. Roberts' course while at Hopkins. Other highlights of the trip included a tour of the White House, as well as a visit to the Air and Space Museum.
