Our school archivist, Thom Peters, provided the following biography:

Born in Chicago on March 10, 1880, Miss Katherine H. Glendinning graduated from Vassar College in 1901 and began her teaching career in mathematics in Chicago before accepting a new position in Havre, Montana in 1903. Glendinning first opened her school in 1907 in her home at 201 Bishop Street, New Haven, before building a new home at 224 Edwards Street to better accommodate her students. Initially, it was open to boys and girls of all ages, from primary through high school. When Glendinning married Col. Harry F. Wanvig in 1917, she decided to sell her school to one of her teachers, Elizabeth Lewis Day, to help raise her husband’s adopted son in Long Island, NY. The catalog for Miss Glendinning’s school begins by stating: “The aim, as in all good schools, is the development of mind and character. The school strives to interest the pupils in their work and to develop systematic habits of study.” This statement of purpose continued to be part of the catalog even after the school became known as “The Day School.” She died on April 15, 1945.
