From Coach William Ewen:

On Wednesday, April 7th, the Hopkins boys' varsity tennis team overcame a fast start by a hard hitting, aggressive, and much improved varsity tennis team from the Kent School to earn a hard fought 5--2 team victory. Kent began the match by winning 2 out of the 3 doubles contests; only co-captains Adam Sauerteig and Lenny Kolstad managed to earn a victory at the #2 doubles position.

During the break between doubles and singles, the Hopkins team was able to regroup and came out determined to make the Kent players adjust to our preferred style of play. Co-captain Lenny Kolstad became the first singles player to win (at #2) with a 6--1, 6--0 thumping of his opponent. He was followed quickly by freshman Phil Bernasek (#3), who triumphed 6--1, 6--2. Kent's lone victory in singles play came at the expense of our #5 player, Dan Wong. Then eighth grader David Zackheim, in his first varsity match at #6 singles, stepped up to the plate and efficiently dispatched a 12th grade Kent opponent by his unintimidated play, winning a crucial match 6--4, 6--4. With the match on the line, co-captain Adam Sauerteig took care of business and clinched the match for Hopkins at #4 with determined and persistent play by a 6--4, 6--2 victory over his clearly frustrated and dejected opponent. The icing on the cake came when Hopkins' #1 player, Alex Zackheim, persevered from one set down to emerge victorious over Kent's top player, 4--6, 6--1, 6--4. All in all, this proved to be an excellent first match for our Hopkins Hilltoppers!
