The Hopkins Junior School team placed 1st at the CT Science Bowl earlier in April, and travelled to Washington D.C. last weekend to compete in Nationals.
Last week, the Hopkins Junior School team who won first place at the CT Science Bowl received their enormous trophy, which coaches Jen Stauffer and Thach Pham presented to the students during lunch announcements on Wednesday April 25.
Following their win at the CT Junior School Science Bowl earlier in April, the Hopkins team of Carmen Ciardello, Evan Pham, Dunia Habboosh, Arman Mitra, and Simon Doss-Gollin journeyed to Washington D.C. to compete in the National Science Bowl from April 26–30. Coaches Stauffer and Pham reported that the group had a wonderful experience competing with their peers from across the Nation. Though the team did not place in the academic competition, they did make it to the finals in the model electric car competition, and placed 8th in the country. Highlights of their trip included attending the National Science and Engineering Festival, meeting Bill Nye (the Science Guy), and attending a talk by Nobel Laureate and Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu.
This was the first year that Hopkins has participated in this program organized by the U.S. Department of Energy, and after our teams successes at the state and national competitions, coaches Stauffer and Pham hope this will become an annual tradition for our school.
Hopkins is a private middle school and high school for grades 7-12. Located on a campus overlooking New Haven, CT, the School takes pride in its intellectually curious students as well as its dedicated faculty and staff.
