On Thursday, October 22, 2015, Hopkins welcomed Vincent A. Volpe '76 to speak at Assembly and to honor him as the 2015–2016 Distinguished Alumnus.
The Hopkins Distinguished Alumni/ae Award is given annually to the person who, among his or her peers, is making outstanding contributions in their professions or fields of endeavors, and the one who best exemplifies all the possibilities his/her Hopkins experience offered.
Mr. Volpe is a graduate of Lehigh University where he earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a B.S. in German Literature. His lifelong career as an engineer was spent at Dresser-Rand, a global supplier of specialized equipment for oil, gas and power industries. Mr. Volpe has traveled extensively in his various positions at Dresser-Rand, ultimately serving as President and Chief Executive Officer since 2000. He retired from that position in August, 2015. In his post-retirement, he has embarked on an entirely new entreprenurial adventure as majority owner and President of Le Havre, the oldest soccer team in France. Mr. Volpe also serves on numerous non-profit boards and is proficient in five languages.
Mr. Volpe spoke to the School about the value of his Hopkins education and the role his teachers and coaches played in his life, especially his wrestling coach, Ralph "Doc" Kirchhofer. A video of his presentation is posted on this page.
Following assembly, Mr. Volpe visited four classes—Introduction to Programming, Spanish 5 Literature, Orchestra and Choir. The Hopkins choir rehearses in the Volpe Choral Room, named in memory of Madeline Volpe, Mr. Volpe's mother. He also attended a luncheon with students and invited faculty members. A dinner reception at Swensen House was held in his honor and attended by members of his family, faculty, and alumni/ae from the Class of l976.
Hopkins is a private middle school and high school for grades 7-12. Located on a campus overlooking New Haven, CT, the School takes pride in its intellectually curious students as well as its dedicated faculty and staff.
