Signed Beam and Tree Installed in the New Academic and Performing Arts Center
In February, Hopkins hosted a drop-in event during which members of the community signed a steel beam designated for the Academic and Performing Arts Center building. Atop the beam stood a small evergreen tree, a symbol in the steel industry signifying that "construction has reached the sky without loss of life or injury, and it bodes well for the future inhabitants of the building." In the U.S., this tradition dates back to the late 1800s. Last week, the beam, adorned with signatures and the symbolic tree, was lowered into place.
See below for pictures of the tree and beam being lowered into the site.
