Democracy Speaker Series: Sam Greco ’11 on Modern Conservatism
On Friday, December 13, Alum Sam Greco ’11 spoke to the Hopkins community at an all-school assembly about modern conservatism and its context in American politics. As a newly elected Republican member of the Florida House of Representatives, Greco outlined some of the concerns of his constituents in District 19, comprising Flagler and St. Johns counties, such as the cost of living and high insurance rates.
Greco also reflected on the connections he made with people at Hopkins who he said have had positive and lasting effects on his life. Notably, classmate Jerrod Dobkin ’11 recently served as his campaign manager. Greco also fondly recollected field trips to Washington D.C. organized by John Roberts that he once attended as a Hopkins student, and the pride he felt in recent years being able to host Hopkins on a private tour of the Senate, the House, and the Capitol Building while he was a law intern. At assembly, Greco emphasized to students that building and keeping relationships with classmates, colleagues, and mentors along the way can help in unexpected ways in the future, no matter what profession one chooses to pursue.
Following the presentation which included a lengthy Q&A session, Greco spent the morning attending classes, where he continued discussions with students and faculty.
Greco’s presentation was part of the School’s 2024-2025 Speaker Series which has focused on the theme of democracy. The series has featured a range of knowledgeable speakers who are offering insights on democracy both in the U.S. and abroad. Through this program, Hopkins aims to deepen students’ knowledge of civics – the mechanics of democracy – and engage in civil discourse. The goal is to educate students on matters of citizenship and prepare them to be critical thinkers.
