Tough loss for Hopkins Gridders in home opener.

Hopkins Football hosted King Low Heywood Thomas of Stamford, CT at home on Saturday, September 19th for the first home game of the season in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.  Despite a strong effort, the Hilltoppers fell to King 30-13 and moved to 1-1 on the 2015 season.

The first half saw the Hopkins defense holding their ground against a very strong and aggressive King offense.  Hopkins got on the board late in the half after Jake Shrader intercepted a deep King pass attempt and returned the ball to the King 1 yard lane.  Two play plays later, Jake Moscarelli '17 powered his way into the end zone to pull Hopkins within a score.  Tom Coughlin '16  added the extra point to make it 14-7.  Hopkins closed out the half down 22-7 after a late King touchdown.

The second half saw the battle continue as both sides fought to gain ground and points.  King took their first drive and scored adding a 2 point conversion to make the score 30-7. Nick Bailey '19  engineered a third quarter scoring drive that was capped by a 65 yard TD pass to wide receiver Jake Shrader '17.  The subsequent point after attempt was blocked bringing the score to 30-13 in favor of King.

Both defenses buckled down after the Shrader score  and did not allow a point for the duration of the game.  The Hilltoppers final drive stalled just shy of the red zone to end the game.  Despite the difficult loss, Hopkins had a number of solid performances.  Dave Barber '16 had another strong day on both sides of the ball anchoring the defensive secondary and gaining hard yards on offense.  Riley Smith '17 contributed on both sides as well as a member of the Hilltoppers Wide Receiver corps with a number of catches and accounted for one of three Hopkins interceptions on defense.  Outside Linebackers Cooper Pettit '17, Dan Jaques '17 and RJ Pantalena '16 along with  Inside Linebackers Sam Hecht '17 and John Blumenthal '18 accounted for a number of tackles for loss on defense.

The Hilltoppers are  back on the road next weekend to take on the Highlanders of Gunnery in Washington, CT.  Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30.  The Hilltoppers will be back home again on October 3rd for their homecoming game against Westminster.  Check back for game highlights and photos.  Thanks to all of the fans who came out today to support the football program.  We appreciate all of your support and effort.  GO HOP!
